Bespoke Canopies

Fabric, as a form of architecture, can be traced back centuries. Today, with the advances of materials and techniques architectural fabric structures can be designed and manufactured to meet the most ambitious, creative architectural concepts.

The design of even the simplest fabric structure can often be a complex task. By their very nature, fabric structures rely on the interaction of both the visual and structural elements to function as a whole.

Structures formed from the fusion of fabric architecture range from a simplistic awning and canopy through a more complex and technically challenging variation on an umbrella.

Integrated elements

Increasingly, fabric architectural solutions are becoming an integral functional element within the building envelope itself.

Textile as a facade offers the option to incorporate innovative design elements that would not be possible or as robust using traditional construction materials. Fabric architecture allied to mast or arch and frame support structures, affords architects the freedom to design visionary products that stand out from the crowd. Fabric architectural concepts have truly come of age.

Fabric choice

The choice of fabric will depend on the characteristics of the structure that is being designed – its function, form and visuality all play and integral roll in its specification.

Whilst there are a number of external fabrics, 4 main types cover the spectrum of structures where external 'fabric' is used – each with their own individual characteristics and performance criteria.

Weatherproof Shade Sails - Rainbow Shade

Knitted HDPE

  • 340 gsm +/- 20.
  • Excellent UV block up to 98.8%.
  • UV stabilised High Density Polyethylene fabric won’t rot or absorb moisture.
  • Monofilament yarn in the warp and weft direction for strength.
  • Tape yarn in the weft direction for excellent UV block.
  • Unique high quality lock-stitch construction for superior impact and tear strength.
  • Heat set to minimise shrinkage and eliminate curling during fabrication.

PVC Coated Polyester (Polyvinylchloride)

  • This is the most cost effective and flexible, in terms of application, membrane material. By its constitution it is both soft and pliable and its performance characteristics change according to the gauge selected.
  • Its lifespan depends on the individual application; however this is typically anything up to 20 years.
Mehler Waterproof Colours

Silicone Coated Glass

  • With a high inbuilt tensile strength and versatile flexible characteristics, silicon coated glass fibre is a dimensionally stable alternative where enhanced longevity is required.

PTFE Coated Glass (Polytetrafluroethylene)

  • The market leader for use in large-scale permanent structures, PTFE has a strength and durability that ensures a useful working life in excess of 3 decades.

Keep It Kool Services

3D Visuals

Engineering and design expertise are used to create photo-realistic models to represent Keep It Kool’s proposals of bespoke design concepts.
Interactive pdf’s, with user navigation, offer the client an in-depth impression of the design intent. Still 3d visualisation images can be super-imposed onto pre-photographed backgrounds. These representations can then be incorporated into “before and after” photomontages, for the client to share their plans with the public once a scheme has been selected and a contract is underway.
